Sardinia’s First Naval Engineering Degree at Olbia
A new milestone for Sardinia’s blue economy has been reached in Olbia, where the University of Cagliari, supported by UniOlbia and CIPNES Gallura, has launched the island’s first undergraduate degree in Naval Engineering.
The programme — the only one of its kind in Sardinia — was created to serve the needs of the island’s nautical industry, which today represents the region’s most advanced and internationally connected sector.
Developed in close collaboration with leading nautical companies, the degree will train the next generation of marine engineers, professionals capable of combining technology, design, innovation, and sustainability in the shipbuilding and refitting sectors.
Students will benefit from internships, laboratory work, and applied research opportunities with the 80 nautical firms based in the Olbia development district managed by CIPNES Gallura — one of the Mediterranean’s emerging hubs for the maritime economy.
This strong link between education and enterprise reflects a strategic vision: to retain and train highly skilled professionals directly within Sardinia, providing qualified engineers to local companies and attracting new industrial investments.
The initiative also represents a system-wide response to the growing demand for specialised skills in Italy’s blue economy.
It aligns perfectly with CIPNES Gallura’s mission to promote internationalisation, sustainable industrial growth, and innovation across Sardinia’s productive ecosystem.
A Master’s Degree in Yacht Design and Naval Architecture, announced by the Universities of Cagliari and Naples Federico II, will soon follow — completing the educational chain and consolidating Olbia’s position as a Mediterranean centre of excellence in maritime education and innovation.
